This fund was created to accept gifts in memory of William M. Beecher.
William M. “Bill” Beecher, a Pulitzer Prize-winning former Washington correspondent for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Boston Globe, died on Friday, February 9, 2024. He 90 was years old.
Beecher, in more than 25 years as a reporter based in Washington, made annual two-to-three-month reporting trips around the world. He also served as Washington bureau chief of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. In addition, he served two tours in government: two years in the Defense Department, rising to the rank of Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs (Acting), and ten years as Director of the Office of Public Affairs for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
In retirement, Beecher taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism. Three of his four daughters attended the university.
All gifts received by the University of Maryland College Park Foundation in memory of Bill Beecher will be directed to a fund, which may be endowed, the purpose of which his family will determine at a later date.
