The Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) was established in 1999 as a partnership between the University of Maryland and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. It advances Earth system science research, teaching, and career training and operates under the Cooperative Earth System Sciences Research Agreement (CESSRA). ESSIC’s focus areas include modeling and prediction, oceanography, hydrology, air quality and remote sensing. ESSIC also administers the Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS), a collaboration with NOAA that aims to improve weather and water forecasting through satellite research. In addition to its work with NASA and NOAA, ESSIC collaborates on projects with agencies such as the USDA. Gifts to this fund provide critical research support in line with the policies and procedures of the University of Maryland College Park Foundation. ESSIC also partners with several UMD academic departments, including Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, Geographical Sciences, and Geology, to further its mission. |
