The E. Kalnay Research in Weather and Climate Modeling was established in July 2021 to support the work of Distinguished University Professor Eugenia Kalnay, Ph.D. ‘71 in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science in the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS). Kalnay’s research interests include numerical weather prediction, data assimilation, predictability and ensemble forecasting, coupled ocean-atmosphere modeling, climate change and sustainability. Prior to joining UMD, Eugenia Kalnay was the Branch Head at NASA Goddard and later the Director of the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction. Among receiving numerous awards, she has achieved two Department of Commerce Gold Medals and one Silver Medal. Gifts to this fund will support Kalnay’s research and expand our understanding of weather and climate as it relates to the ocean’s atmosphere.
