What leadership roles or volunteer experiences have been important to you during your time at Maryland?
During Spring semester 2015, I was asked by an Italian professor in the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (where I work as a media services technition) if I would be willing to tutor one of her colleagues. Her colleague was an Italian graduate professor who was teaching a class at UMD for the semester. It was her first time in the US, so her English skills needed improvement, and I agreed to meet with her once a week to assist her with English grammar. Although getting the opportunity to help someone was fulfilling in and of itself, the thing I enjoyed most from this experience was learning about a different culture. She told me about her daily life and activities, and we enjoyed comparing differences between American and Italian culture.

One exciting class that I am taking part in this semester is AREC489N where the class engages in a semester long consulting project regarding the economics of local agriculture and food hubs in Howard County. The class is new this semester and I am enjoying it because the style is more practical application rather than standard academic. The type of consulting project that we engage in as a class is something that I may encounter in the workforce once I graduate, and I find that it is important to get this type of exposure. While the typical academic style class is important to learning basics, it is also beneficial to be introduced to the types of work I may be doing post-graduation. Additionally, I am a Howard County resident, so it is exciting to study a project that operates in my own town. I am eager to see what this class brings next!
