1 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED:
What has your scholarship meant to you and how has it enabled you to pursue new and exciting opportunities?
This scholarship helped me to recover from a very difficult time financially when I was nearly forced to withdraw from school and almost ended up without a home. It is good to know there are people out there that recognize and support our efforts as students, particularly non-traditional students such as myself and other Portney Scholarship recipients. Thanks to this scholarship, I am well on my way to becoming a Materials Engineer.
Why did you choose to attend the University of Maryland, what makes this place special to you and what is your favorite part of being a Terp?
I grew up near the University of Maryland and have always felt like a terp. This and the fact the we have a world class engineering program made Maryland an obvious choice for me.
How will you make a positive difference in the world?
I currently work for an ultrasonic camera manufacturer for non-destructive inspection. Thanks to my education at UMD, I am engineering materials and products which make the world better and safer. This is a value I intend to hold throughout my career. I also look forward to being able to give back to the community in other ways as I become more successful in my career.
