What has your scholarship meant to you and how has it enabled you to pursue new and exciting opportunities?
This scholarship to me is the helping hand I need to help me in my pursuit of happiness, the accomplishment of my dream. My parents do not have the economic means to keep me in college, I am here now because I have been given financial aid. But as the school years go by, I see that my financial aid is going down, and with it my chances of finishing the four years required for a bachelor’s degree. My parents, the ones who believed in me and taught me that in life you must always take advantage of opportunities because you never know what you can accomplish, wish they could pay every single penny for my education. But I know the reality is that they cannot, as hard as they might try, because they have jobs that only put enough money on the table just to pay for the basic necessities. And so, this scholarship will open a door for me for the future, a next step towards successfully achieving my dream. I am honored to receive this scholarship and I will prove myself to those who believed in me.
Why did you choose to attend the University of Maryland, what makes this place special to you and what is your favorite part of being a Terp?
I chose to come to the University of Maryland because of its diversity, rigorous courses, history, accomplishments, and campus life. Ever since Junior year in high school, I knew that the University of Maryland was the college of my dreams. I imagined myself walking through the buildings, admiring the history and becoming part of a legacy. And so, I kept saying to myself over and over again, that Maryland was where I wanted to be. I knew that by coming here, I was going to attend one of the top schools in the nation. I knew that coming here was the right choice, the BEST choice that I could make at the moment. When I applied to Maryland, I made sure I had given it my all because I knew I had one shot. I knew that getting accepted into Maryland wasn't as easy as any other college. And when I received that letter, the letter that began another chapter in my life, I cried tears of joy because I had finally made it. But that was just the beginning and I knew many more great things were still to come. And I was right, four semesters later, I am still admiring what the University of Maryland has to offer. I am proud to be a Terp, and my goal is to become more than a Terp: an alum.
