What leadership roles or volunteer experiences have been important to you during your time at Maryland?
Activities Assistant, Arden Courts, Alzheimer's Assisted Living (2003-2005)
What has your scholarship meant to you and how has it enabled you to pursue new and exciting opportunities?
This scholarship would first of all mean great honor to me. I highly value support and encouragement of any form. It is important to me that I am surrounded by people who are supportive. Receiving his scholarship would only strengthen my belief in ingenuity of people who support education. Education and learning are the most important to me. Also, this scholarship would ease the financial burden my family and I carry. As an international student I pay out-of-state tuition, which can be up to $10,000 a semester.
Why did you choose to attend the University of Maryland, what makes this place special to you and what is your favorite part of being a Terp?
I choose to attend UM because its communication program is one of the best in the United States. Ever since I was accepted, I have been surrounded by people who are truly interested in education and by people who want to provide the best education to their students. I enjoy working in teams (good team communication is essential to good work ethics), improving my writing skills, critically and analytical thinking. I love research of miscellaneous topics and writing speeches for public presentation. All of these are part of my experience at UM.
How will you make a positive difference in the world?
As I mentioned I focus on intercultural communication in my studies. I believe that I will make a positive difference in the world by developing my career in this field I want to work with miscellaneous groups of people (of different races, genders, ages, nationalities etc.) and teach tolerance and understanding between groups that struggle to understand each other. Born in the Czech Republic and currently living in the United States, I have had the chance to experience diversity and realize its undeniable value to the societies. More specifically, I want to have my own company and focus on training/coaching people who work with people different from them. It is of great importance to me that I myself am the example of tolerance in my everyday life.
