What has your scholarship meant to you and how has it enabled you to pursue new and exciting opportunities?
My scholarship has enabled me to enroll at the University of Maryland and pursue the education that I want. It has allowed me to focus on my studies and work during the summer (and not during the school year). Furthermore, it has allowed me experience an occupation that I find extremely interesting and to develop meaningful relationships with many people during the summer internship that it provides.
Why did you choose to attend the University of Maryland, what makes this place special to you and what is your favorite part of being a Terp?
The truth of the matter is that a big impact on my choice of school was money. The (in-state) tuition at the University of Maryland is considerably lower than that of other universities, especially for private and out-of-state schools. This was not the only factor, however. The University of Maryland, College Park has an excellent engineering program that is ranked amongst the top in the nation - and it continues to improve. In addition, it has an engineering college that provides a wide range of specializations, which means that I am able to enroll in both programs that I want to pursue: Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.
How will you make a positive difference in the world?
Safety is a very important issue in human life. A very large part of our time is spent in automobiles, and a very large part of the automotive industry is dedicated to occupant and pedestrian safety. Seat belts, safety glass, air bags, and anti-lock brakes are just a few examples of ideas that were once revolutionary and are now standard devices on almost every new vehicle. I can't say that my involvement in this industry will lead to any breakthroughs in automotive safety (like those listed above), nor can I say that my influence will have any impact at all. I do know, however, that I definitely will not make a positive difference if I do not try.
