Cleaning up Sentinel Swamp Sanctuary
1 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED:
What leadership roles or volunteer experiences have been important to you during your time at Maryland?
During the 2015-2016 school year I worked with Dr. Baldwin and a team of my peers to set up a community involved wetland monitoring project for a small wetland in College Park. The project was labeled "Sentinels for Global Change" and we named the wetland "Sentinel Swamp Sanctuary." The program was driven by community members who would record tree budding times, bird species, and frog species that were seen at the wetland. We presented our project to the Mayor and College Park City Council. Our project was very well recieved.
What has your scholarship meant to you and how has it enabled you to pursue new and exciting opportunities?
Without the Pauline and Shirley Smith Scholarship I would not have been able to finish my final semester of studies at UMD. So simply put, my gratitude cannot be overstated.
