2 SCHOLARSHIPs AWARDED:
What has your scholarship meant to you and how has it enabled you to pursue new and exciting opportunities?
Receiving this scholarship allowed me to attend Smith full time and focus on my work and career search. This focus led to my securing an internship at a Fortune 500 consulting firm, an opportunity I would otherwise not have had. Attending full time has also given me the opportunity to stretch my boundaries. My classmates have shown me different ways of thinking and challenged me to grow.
Why did you choose to attend the University of Maryland, what makes this place special to you and what is your favorite part of being a Terp?
I chose to attend Smith for a few reasons. First, the stellar reputation of the school gave me confidence in my decision to leave the workforce and focus on expanding my knowledge base. Second, when I attended the admitted students weekend the enthusiasm of the student body and faculty amazed me. Finally, the broad areas of focus and the ability to take courses across disciplines mean I could gain as much expereince as possible in two years. Smith is special to me because of the people. The professors are eager to teach and always open to helping you. My classmates are extremely collegial. Also, we do not view each other as competittion, but truly as colleagues. My favorite part of being a Terp is the passion students, alumni and faculty have for the school.

To date, my favorite extracurricular activity has been Leadership Under Fire. This event, sponsored by the professional communications club, gives students the opportunity to take the lead of a company in crisis. Over 24 hours our team worked out the details of how to approach the Target data hack. At the end, we detailed our plan to a panel of professors and reporters who asked us questions. While difficult, this simulated pressure gave all of us a chance to expereince an extremely difficult scenario. Also, our team came in second!
