Dr. Charles J. Beatty Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship History

Mary Ann Beatty established the Dr. Charles J. Beatty Memorial Scholarship in December 2006 to support students who transfer from Montgomery College in Maryland and enroll in the College of Education. This fund honors the memory of her husband and his dedication to teacher education. Charles Beatty was known for his love of teaching and was recognized for his passion through awards such as the Master Teacher Award and the Distinguished Faculty Award.

Donor Statement

Dr. Charles J. Beatty was born in Iron Mountain, Michigan. He earned his bachelor's degree from Northern Michigan University in 1959, a master's degree in education from Michigan State University in 1963 and a doctoral degree in education from the Ohio State University in 1967. He was married for 38 years to College of Education alumna, Mary Ann Miller Beatty.

He joined the University of Maryland's Department of Industrial, Technological, and Occupational Education in 1966, received University awards for outstanding teaching, and served as assistant and acting chairperson. Following the department's closure in 1994, he coordinated the University Commencement and served as associate dean in the College of Education. "Chuck" was active in many professional and community organizations, including Phi Delta Kappa, Iota Lambda Sigma, the Knights of Columbus, Boy Scouts of America, and church groups. He was cited for outstanding service to many organizations, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Technology Education Association of Maryland and the Humanitarian Award from the International Technology Education Association.
