Charles H. Coates, Jr. established the Charles H. Coates Commemorative Fund in December 1998 to support graduates and faculty in military sociology, as well as graduate students in military sociology, as they publish and disseminate their research results. This fund was established in memory and recognition of his father, who served in the Department of Sociology, for his service and contributions to the field of military sociology.
Born in 1903, Dr. Charles H. Coates graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1924, serving in various command and staff positions in the Army until retirement in 1949. Upon receiving the Doctorate of Philosophy in Sociology from Louisiana State University in 1955, he joined the faculty of the Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland, where he served until his death in 1972. While there, Dr. Coates founded the academic discipline of Military Sociology for the study of the military as a major institution of American Society, authored the first textbook in the field and conducted related research. Subsequently, this field of study has become recognized both nationally and internationally. Charles H. Coates, Jr. established the Charles H. Coates Commemorative Fund to honor his late father for his services and contributions to the field of Military Sociology.
