The Levine Family, represented by Dr. William S. Levine, established the Shirley Johannesen Levine Endowed Scholarship in Electrical and Computer Engineering in March 2016 to support undergraduate students in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Although she was not an engineer, Shirley Johannesen Levine loved to accompany her husband when he went to technical conferences in his field, control systems. As a very warm, generous and friendly person, she was known and loved by many of the people who attended the conferences. As a feminist, she helped found the support group for the women who participate in the conferences, the aptly names Women in Control. As a friend to the world, she buttonholed every woman she saw with a conference badge and told her she must attend the luncheon meeting of the Women in Control. This scholarship honors her memory by supporting students in electrical and computer engineering who also are interested in promoting gender diversity in engineering.
