John I. Heise, Jr. '47, friends and former players of Coach Driesell created the Coach Charles "Lefty" Driesell Endowed Scholarship for Men's Basketball in February 2008 to support members of the men's basketball team. As head basketball coach, Driesell led the Terps to eight NCAA tournament appearances, a National Invitation Tournament, an Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championship and ACC regular season championships.
Charles "Lefty" Driesell became head coach of the University of Maryland men's basketball team in 1969. During his 17 season tenure, Coach Driesell compiled a 348-159 (.686) overall record, two regular-season conference titles and one ACC Tournament crown. Eight times his Maryland teams were ranked in the Associated Press Top 10 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament; three times they played in the National Invitation Tournament, where they were champions in 1971-72. He also coached basketball greats Tom McMillen, Len Elmore, Buck Williams, John Lucas, Albert King and others.
In order to honor Coach Driesell's dedication to Maryland basketball, John I. Heise, Jr. '47 and other friends and former players of Coach Driesell established an endowed fund to support scholarships for student athletes at the University.
