In my classroom
3 SCHOLARSHIPs AWARDED:
What leadership roles or volunteer experiences have been important to you during your time at Maryland?
A volunteer experience that has been important to me during my time at Maryland was when I participated in Read Across America Day. I went to Paint Brach Elementary School in College Park, Maryland. During my time spent at the elementary school, I read a story to several classes. The event was a competition to see which school in America could have the most classes read the same story. The students were so excited to have this "brain break."
What has your scholarship meant to you and how has it enabled you to pursue new and exciting opportunities?
This scholarship means so much to me. I am grateful to have received such an amazing gift. It is very difficult for me to able to continue my education because of the cost of college and take care of my own family and household. This scholarship has allowed me to follow my dreams and continue my education. I have many students loans from community college and now the University of Maryland. When I received this scholarship, it covered the cost of an entire semester of courses at the University of Maryland and pushed me one step closer to my ultimate goal which is graduating.
How will you make a positive difference in the world?
I will make a positive difference in the world by creating a supportive, engaging classroom environment for my future students and letting them know that they have the potential to succeed. A teacher is one of the most influential people in a child's life. By motivating and encouraging a child to be the best that they can be and to never give up, I am putting them on the path to success. I am creating determined individuals who can strive for the best and become future doctors, lawyers, etc. By being an educator, I am the foundation of their lives. So much time is spent getting to know students and in some situations, the teacher is the only positive part of the student's day, depending on circumstances at home. I want to be able to empower my students because they are the future.
