1 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED:
What leadership roles or volunteer experiences have been important to you during your time at Maryland?
I became an intern at the Mental Health Association of Montgomery County. It was through this experience that I truly got to put into practice many of the helping skills that I had been taught through psychology courses at the University of Maryland College Park. Up until this point I had always been hesitant as to whether or not I would be a good fit for the academic and career path that I had chosen. Through this internship I discovered that not only was this a good fit for me, but I excelled at it. This experience gave me the motivation and self-confidence to finish my degree choice and begin applying to graduate schools to continue on this path.
What has your scholarship meant to you and how has it enabled you to pursue new and exciting opportunities?
While attending the University of Maryland, finances were of course a major concern. Being a full-time student and trying to support myself through college was difficult even during the best of times. My husband and I also ran into problems with our housing arrangement which put a significant strain on our finances. It would have been extremely difficult to stay on top of my studies while worrying about our finances and living situation. As a non-traditional student, there is so much to worry about outside of school and it would have been all too easy to put off my studies and still not have a degree. Through the kindness of others I received this scholarship which allowed me to once again focus on my studies and not get side-tracked.
How will you make a positive difference in the world?
Ever since separating from the United States Air Force, I have wanted to work for the Department of Veterans Affairs to help our veterans get the care they need and deserve.
What is your major, minor, class and graduation year?

Graduated: December 2015
What is your Hometown?
I grew up in a suburb five minutes outside of northeast Philadelphia.
