What leadership roles or volunteer experiences have been important to you during your time at Maryland?
In the past, I have held several leadership positions and volunteered with many organizations. During my high school career, I served as the Treasurer and then President of the Spanish Honor Society where I was able to recruit over twenty new members and host events such as International Night at my school. I was also Secretary of the National Honor Society in which I was responsible for keeping the time of the meetings and delivering important information about the organization to the members. In addition to these roles, I was a contestant on It's Academic where I was challenged to compete with other high schools in answering trivia questions. Currently, I am a member of the Smith School Women's Society where I have took the initiative to join the Major Events Committee that works to successfully develop conferences geared towards encouraging women to pursue higher education and emerge into the corporate world.
I have volunteered with the clubs and organizations that I have been a part of in many ways such as tutoring and mentoring young students, making and donating clothes and blankets to people in need, volunteering to beautify my school, and also at animal shelters to help more pets get adopted. In college, I continue to volunteer with the animal shelters in addition to participating in the volunteer activities with my scholarship program such as with S.O.M.E (So Others Might Eat) and KEEN (Kids Enjoying Exercise Now) working with disabled children. I always enjoy volunteering and being a part of a club or organization because it helps me to develop skills and knowledge about myself while helping others and giving back to my community.
What has your scholarship meant to you and how has it enabled you to pursue new and exciting opportunities?
My scholarship has opened the doors of opportunity for me. It is a blessing, and I am truly honored to have received this award. This scholarship is proof that hard work indeed bestows great rewards and serves as encouragement to continue on a path to greatness. Through this scholarship, I have established great relationships, and received beneficial advice and resources from my mentors and peers that have aided me in my academic, social, and professional career. With this support, I believe that with determination and passion, I can be successful. Without this scholarship, I would not be where I am today. I would have never had the opportunity to meet all of my great friends, or the faculty and staff at the University of Maryland who are genuinely thrilled to help and watch me grow and progress as an individual. I have been given the opportunity to expand my knowledge, not only in academics, but in knowledge about myself. This scholarship has also enforced the importance of giving back to your community because by helping others, you also help yourself. I am mostly grateful that this scholarship allows me to be an example to other students that through hard work and dedication, you can achieve in life.
