What leadership roles or volunteer experiences have been important to you during your time at Maryland?
I am a person who is committed to respect and my moral principles and values. Thus, as a student I had the opportunity to find ways that I could practice these values to help my community. Studying at Montgomery College I was the President of the global project Walk in My Shoes. The purpose of this project is to help a non-profit organization, located in DC, collect shoes to be sent to children in third world countries. My tasks as the President consisted of creating, organizing, and implementing shoe donation drives around the college campus, elementary and high schools, all with the purpose of collecting new or gently worn shoes that would help children in need.
In addition to this project, I volunteered to help “Upscale Resale”, a campus project. This project intended to help a struggling local thrift shop that provides jobs to people with mental disabilities. The Upscale Resale project was intended to help the business increase their revenue so they could continue paying their debt and still provide jobs for people who don’t easily find jobs due to their illness. The activities I participated in consisted in collecting materials that would improve the sales of the store such as clothes and shoes. Also, I helped and worked with marketing campaigns that were useful to invite people to come to the store.
Furthermore, I was part of the leadership committee of the Macklin Business Institute, an Honors program at Montgomery College. In this program, I was the Secretary of the Student Leadership Committee and I was in charge of keeping track of the agenda for the program. In addition, my duties consisted of sending reminders and organizing student events so that everything planned would be completed on time.
What has your scholarship meant to you and how has it enabled you to pursue new and exciting opportunities?
Being an immigrant student, I have come to this country with a big dream and big plans. My goals in life are to have a successful career in the Marketing industry, become the best person I can be, and give back to my community. Thus, after obtaining my Associate’s degree I looked forward to continue working to achieve my goals. The next step in my career plan was to obtain my bachelor’s degree in Marketing. I am the third of 4 children and paying for my siblings’ education and mine it’s not an easy task for my father, who is the only provider of the family. This scholarship has been really important for me because during this time of economic instability this scholarship helped me and my family avoid additional financial pressures. This help enabled me to avoid higher student loans and permitted me to focus more on my studies and not on how to pay for school.
For these reasons, I could not find myself anymore honored and grateful of having received this scholarship. Being a recipient of this scholarship meant to me that someone out there is betting on me and it’s willing to support me and help me get an education. As well, this scholarship meant that my hard work as a student does pays off and it made me feel more proud and humble about myself.
How will you make a positive difference in the world?
I lived in an environment where I learn how some people in the business field benefited themselves and affected many others. When I was in El Salvador I lived firsthand the consequences of people without scruples and without moral values being in charge of a nation. I decided to pursue an education and a career in the business field because this career would give me the tools to prove others that it is possible to do business without tarnishing and trampling human dignity and integrity. Having this background, I am determined to use my education to change and help others so I could make a bigger difference in the world.
I believe that good actions speak more than words. I will make a positive influence by living up to my standards and values and making sure that people learn not only from my job and words but also from my actions. Just as this scholarship proved me that someone is supporting me to complete my goals, I want to support others to fight for their goals and to work towards their happiness. I want to make a difference by helping to improve the standard of living of those who don’t have enough resources. Furthermore, I will make a positive difference by standing up against what is morally wrong and against those who live by benefiting themselves while making others pay the consequences. Lastly, I will strive to encourage others who have the ability to help me in my task of helping others who are in need.
