3 SCHOLARSHIPs AWARDED:
What has your scholarship meant to you and how has it enabled you to pursue new and exciting opportunities?
As an out-of-state student, this scholarship allowed me to attend the University of Maryland without having to borrow to finance my education. I have been part of the excellent Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources where I’ve taken interesting, challenging classes while learning about and working with a variety of animals.
Why did you choose to attend the University of Maryland, what makes this place special to you and what is your favorite part of being a Terp?
I chose to attend the University of Maryland because of its animal science program and the farm on campus. As someone who grew up having never seen a farm, I was really excited by the opportunity for experience with animals I’d never gotten the chance to work with. Also, I knew with its variety of high-quality programs I would be able to maintain my other interests in music and language. When I first visited, it felt so comfortable—walking along the mall, surrounded by trees and brick buildings, with students lounging in the grass, it felt like what I’d imagined college would.
How will you make a positive difference in the world?
While I would like to complete a veterinary degree after my undergraduate work, I would also like to get a PhD so I can apply that knowledge to animal-related research. Although I’m not sure what area specifically I would like to investigate, doing research will let me find solutions to problems that will help more animals than I would as an individual vet, and potentially have translational applications to human medicine as well.
