What has your scholarship meant to you and how has it enabled you to pursue new and exciting opportunities?
First, the scholarship has given me recognition that my work on campus has been noticed. That recognition encourages me to work harder and achieve even better things. The scholarship has also enabled me to worry less about the financial burden of tuition and take advantage of some other opportunities. For example, I was selected for a conference in Germany with 300 top business students from around the globe, and the scholarship money will help pay for the plane ticket to get there. I believe that experiences outside of the classroom improve the academic experience at Maryland, and this scholarship has enabled me to do take advantage of those opportunities.
Why did you choose to attend the University of Maryland, what makes this place special to you and what is your favorite part of being a Terp?
Many people ask me, "Why would you come from Miami, Florida to Maryland?" Although on some cold, rainy days I question my decision, I quickly remember why I chose this school. First, the students I met from the University seemed to genuinely care about more than themselves. When I asked a question before making my decision, everyone was extremely helpful and seemed to really love the school.
Additonally, when I came to visit, the opportunities for campus activities and experiences seemed endless. I have been fortunate to take advantage of an internship in Central America, short-term trips to Asia, and a semester abroad in Spain, all because of the choices the University and Smith School have offered.
The Maryland weather might not beat Miami, but my experience at the University of Maryland makes it well worth a few cold months.
How will you make a positive difference in the world?
I hope to make a positive difference in the world by bringing together my knowledge about business and my care about people to help others around the world. I hope that in 50 years, I can say that I participated in a change toward businesses helping others, not just their shareholders.
I also hope that, one day, I will be able to give back to students by offering scholarships similar to the one I have received.
