What leadership roles or volunteer experiences have been important to you during your time at Maryland?
I am currently the President of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. I am also a supervisor at my local swim club.
What has your scholarship meant to you and how has it enabled you to pursue new and exciting opportunities?
This scholarship has meant so much to me and my family. My family does not have enormous amounts of money, so every little bit counts. I have an older brother in college, a younger brother who is a junior in high school, and a younger sister in elementary school. My parents both work extremely hard so I can go to school. Right now, my dad is working two jobs so my older brother and I can go to fantastic universities. Without this scholarship, I would be forced to take out student loans, or get a job to pay for school. If I were forced to get a job, I would not be able to focus as much on my studies and my grades would probably drop. Because I have been able to focus on my schoolwork, I have been able to maintain a 3.791 GPA and become president of my fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon. Without this scholarship, I would not be able to do any of this.
Why did you choose to attend the University of Maryland, what makes this place special to you and what is your favorite part of being a Terp?
When I was a senior in high school, I took an engineering class that really sparked my interest in the subject. We learned how to perform engineering drawings as well as basic fundamentals of structures. Our class also was able to design and build two types of bridges and a tower and then crush them to see how strong they were. After this class, I knew that I wanted to pursue engineering. I knew that the University of Maryland had a fantastic engineering program, and after I visited the university, I absolutely loved it. I was extremely excited about the new Kim Building, and all of the resources that Maryland had to offer. When finalizing my decision, I realized that Maryland was affordable, exciting, and I knew that I would receive the best education here.
