1 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED:
What leadership roles or volunteer experiences have been important to you during your time at Maryland?
I have had a great deal of valuable opportunities at UMD both within academia and in the field. I was lucky enough to be selected for both the winter in India course and Indonesia course the following year. Through these unique opportunities I was able to work with the Wildlife Trust of India and met with a wide range of nonprofits and government agencies in Indonesia. I have been able to volunteer with the Amazon Conservation Team, the Smithsonian National Zoo, and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. I truly value these experiences and I am glad that I was lucky enough to work with such diverse organizations. I learned a lot about different methods of conservation and environmental policy in a variety of countries and the approaches of different organizations.
What has your scholarship meant to you and how has it enabled you to pursue new and exciting opportunities?
Without these scholariships I would not have been able to afford the Indonesia winter course which was one of my most valuable experiences at UMD. I deeply appreciate the opportunity I was able to pursue in visiting such a diverse country under the direction of a skilled professor. I was able to learn about some great successes in conservation and environmental policy and some massive struggles.
How will you make a positive difference in the world?
I have been enamored by the natural world for as long as I can remember and I am increasingly worried about the disappearance of wild lands and the degredation of coastal environments. My goal is to help society appreciate the value of our wildlands and the importance of wetlands, living shorelines, and coastal areas by desigining conservation, restoration, and preservation plans that are supported by local communities and can sustainably persist for generations.
What is your major, minor, class and graduation year?
I am pursing a masters degree in conservation biology and sustainable development and a masters of public policy in environmental policy
What is your Hometown?
I was born in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania and lived for several years in Otavalo, Ecuador and Baltimore, Maryland. I now live in Takoma Park, DC.
