1 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED:
What leadership roles or volunteer experiences have been important to you during your time at Maryland?
Through my role as President of the UMD chapter of Sigma Gamma Tau (National Aerospace Honor Society) I have worked to increase particpation in outreach events among undergraduate aerospace engineers. Under my leadership we have built up our partnership with Women in Aerospace and Aeronautics (WIAA) and participated in the Women In Engineering DREAM Conference and WIAA day. Developing a student tour program with the Aerospace department where SGT members sit on in meetings and tours with prospective students has been especially rewarding. Seeing the looks of excitment and curiousity when giving a tour of the Space Power and Propulsion Lab has been a strong indicator that the student has decided to attend UMD and I am grateful to get to show off all the amazing opportunities at UMD.
What has your scholarship meant to you and how has it enabled you to pursue new and exciting opportunities?
Without this scholarship, I would not have been able to dedicate my time to conducting research. Thank you!
What is your major, minor, class and graduation year?
I am a senior, aerospace engineering major, graduating in May 2017
What is your Hometown?
Portage, Michigan (just south of Kalamazoo).
Tell us about your favorite class, extracurricular activity, academic opportunity, community involvement or another unique experience.
Conducting research as an Undergraduate Research Assistant at the UMD Center for Orbital Debris Education and Research as exatly the kind of work I wanted to be doing when deciding to return to school. My research project involves designing an algorithm that can allow for faster predictions of collisions between on orbit satellites and debris. Earth orbit is becoming more crowded by the day and we must be able to protect the orbital infrastructure that supports our global and interconnected way of life. Conducting research at CODER has left me with skills (like learning to program in parallel) that will help set me apart as I continue my career.
