What leadership roles or volunteer experiences have been important to you during your time at Maryland?
During my time at Maryland, I received an opportunity to be employed for Engineering for Kids. I was able to be a Lead Teacher and provide younger kids with knowledge of programming games and robots. I maintained control of inventory and coordinated class activities. This leadership role had a huge impact on my life, as I was able to teach younger students the importantance of technology in the related field.
What has your scholarship meant to you and how has it enabled you to pursue new and exciting opportunities?
My scholarship has had a significant impact towards my professional and personal opportunities. I come from a low-income family, where I struggled, financially, with my education. This scholarship has given me the opportunity to continue moving forward to acheive my professional goals. I am now interning at a Software company, where I can use the skills that I have acquired in my classes and put them to practice in a real-world setting.
Why did you choose to attend the University of Maryland, what makes this place special to you and what is your favorite part of being a Terp?
I chose to attend the University of Maryland because I enjoy the campus culture. The high levels of diversity is incredible and provides grounds for learning about different cultures. I have known I wanted to attend the University of Maryland, since I was in middle school. The education system is fantastic and is continuing to open many doors for me- professionally.
How will you make a positive difference in the world?
I will use the knowledge that I have acquired, from UMD, to provide for my community. I hope to teach younger children the importance of pursuing their education. I want to become a role model for children from Washington D.C. public schools that they can acheive anything through motivation and a good education.
What is your major, minor, class and graduation year?
My major is Computer Science and I am a rising-Senior. I will graduate in Spring of 2018.
