How will you make a positive difference in the world?
I wish to use my engineering degree to help the local community I will be working in. This can include improving structures in the area that need maintence and designing and building infrastructure. I have also been given the opportunity to travel to Peru for Engineers without Borders. We are building a bridge that we designed for a local community in Compone, Peru.
What is your major, minor, class and graduation year?
My major is Civil Engineering with a specialty in structural and geotechnical enginering. I am currenty a senior and graudate in Spring 2017.
Tell us about your favorite class, extracurricular activity, academic opportunity, community involvement or another unique experience.
I am involved in the Steel Bridge competition hosted by the American Society of Engineers. For this competetion we have to design and fabricate a bridge made only of steel that must support a load of 2500 pounds. The bridge must also be constructed using small peices that the team must be able to quickly put together. This year, the joints we ordered were delayed and could only arive after competition, the team learned of this a few days before competition. For the next few days we worked usually until 2 in the morning and on friday night we worked all night fabricating and trying to design the bridge with joints we had from old bridges and making them work with our design. This is my favorite extracraricular because of the design experience we get and the team building and problem solving opportunities that arise. |
