1 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED:
What has your scholarship meant to you and how has it enabled you to pursue new and exciting opportunities?
This scholarship has really meant a lot to me. It has reduced the financial pressure of college and has eliminated the need for me to graduate a semester early. The extra semester allowed me to pursue the ACESII minor and work with full time internships over the summer without having to take summer and winter classes. I have started ACESII and it influenced me to pursue the cybersecurity specialization of Computer Science. So without this scholarship, I would be heading in a completely different direction within Computer Science still trying to find what exactly interests me. I cannot thank you enough for this scholarship.
Why did you choose to attend the University of Maryland, what makes this place special to you and what is your favorite part of being a Terp?
I chose University of Maryland because I really liked the feel and the size of the campus. UMD is in-state, is close enough to home that I can go home when I need/want to, and is a very prestigious school. I knew that I would recieve a very valuable education going to UMD. Another major factor in attending the University of Maryland is ACES. Maryland is currently the only college in the nation to have a cybersecurity honors program which drew my interest. I choose ACES as my honors program and it has been a really rewarding experience. What truly makes Maryland special and my favorite part of being a Terp is the people, school spirit, and the close proximity to government and Computer Science companies. Everybody I've met here at Maryland has great school spirit and supports all of our sport teams and I've met so many great friends. There have also been so many opportunities for research and internships at Maryland that would be harder to find at other colleges. All of these experiences, together, make the University of Maryland a very special school.
What is your major, minor, class and graduation year?
My major is Computer Science concentrating in Cyber Security along with minors in Mathematics and ACESII (Advanced Cybersecurity Experience for Students). My graduation will be May 2019.
What is your Hometown?
My hometown is Annapolis, Maryland. I have lived there my entire life.
Tell us about your favorite class, extracurricular activity, academic opportunity, community involvement or another unique experience.
My favorite class is CMSC330 (Programming Languages) because we are learning many different styles and methods for coding and how to take advantage of each coding style. My favorite extraciricular activities are Ultimate Frisbee and the ACES Competition Team. I played Ultimate Frisbee in High School and it is rewarding to play against greater competition in college. ACES competition team allows me to learn about both offensive and defensive tactics that are commonly used in real life cyber defenses and helps me learn even more about cybersecurity while on the cybersecurity track.
