What has your scholarship meant to you and how has it enabled you to pursue new and exciting opportunities?
I believe the Smith school gives students a rare opportunity of never reaching a ceiling, but instead giving them fuel to push every boundary set before them. By this I mean the Smith school gives students so many different tracks and facets to go into that one could never be bored. And this isn’t only limited to academic means, but also social, professional, cultural and even international outlets are put at student’s feet just waiting to be taken advantage of. I have personally tried to make it a point to try as much as I can, from traveling to Asia, to joining an esteemed honors program, to even joining a professional business fraternity.
While some schools may have some of these, the Smith school is still able to keep the students feeling like they personally care about them and help each one succeed. The reason why I choose UMD was because of the personability of the business school. I set up an interview with Dr. K when I was thinking of committing to UMD. Instead, when I was taking my orientation of the Smith School, Dr. K took me out of it and gave me a tour himself and then sat me down and asked me what I was looking for in a college. He by no means was selling UMD, but took an interest in what I wanted and explained other options as well. It was because of this interaction that I choose UMD.
How will you make a positive difference in the world?
I think everyone has their own idea of how they are making their mark on campus. For me it used to be about leaving a “legacy” where I would be remembered, and that’s what I think most people try to do. However, as my time here as progressed, it has become more the personal connections I have made that have really made my time here worthwhile, and has changed my view of the mark I want to leave. One quote that really resonates with this is from Maya Angelou,
“At the end of the day people won't remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.”
Since meeting all these amazing and caring people from my time here at UMD, I want to leave my mark on them instead of on campus because it wont be the “things” that I remember, but the people I will remember.
What that boils down to is just trying to be the best individual I can be and loving them as a brother would. For me, I really do get happiness from seeing other people succeed, especially when I know I had a hand in it.
What is your major, minor, class and graduation year?
I am a junior studying Information Systems and Operations Management & Business Analytics with a minor in Leadership and Military Studies. I plan to graduate in May 2018
What is your Hometown?
I am from Hershey, Pennsylvania, aka the Sweetest Place On Earth. However, I have come to love College Park and know that the quiet town of Hershey is not the type of town I want to be living in later, but more of the sub-metropolitan area that College park eminates.
