Brent R. Mayer graduated from the University of Maryland in December 2004 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He was one of six children and was the first in his family to graduate from college. Brent paid for his own education and held down almost a full-time job to do so. He loved sports, playing the guitar and electronics. In January 2003, Brent was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He fought the disease with courage and managed to complete his degree while undergoing chemotherapy. Slightly more than a year after his diagnosis, Brent passed away on January 20, 2005.
In order to provide a lasting tribute to Brent's life, his fiancée, Lori Cumberland along with other friends and family members, established, through the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, Inc., an endowed fund to support a scholarship in the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park.
