Robert M. Gagnon Scholarship Endowment

Scholarship History

Alumnus Robert M. Gagnon established the Robert M. Gagnon Scholarship Endowment in June 2006 to support full-time junior or senior fire protection engineering students in the A. James Clark School of Engineering who have financial need; show great interest and ability in fire suppression and detection design; and who have demonstrated great potential for leadership in the profession of fire protection engineering.

Donor Statement

Robert M. Gagnon P.E. holds a B.A. in Mathematics from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College), and a B.S. ('90) and M.S. ('95) in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland. Founder and President of Gagnon Engineering, a fire protection engineering consulting firm based in Woodbine, Maryland, he also serves as a lecturer in the Department of Fire Protection Engineering at the A. James Clark School of Engineering. A registered Professional Engineer in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia, and a fellow of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), he has performed design, calculation, specification, and consultation on fire suppression and detection systems since 1970. In addition, he has authored several books, including: Design of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems (author), Design of Special Hazard and Fire Alarm Systems (author), A Designer's Guide to Fire Alarm Systems (co-author), A Designer's Guide to Automatic Sprinkler Systems (editor/author), a chapter on Ultra High Speed Deluge Systems in the NFPA Fire Protection Handbook, and numerous journal and scholarly papers. He is the past President of SFPE Chesapeake Chapter, Maryland Society of Professional Engineers (MDSPE), and the Board of Directors of the University of Maryland Engineering Alumni Chapter, and is currently President of Tau Beta Pi Baltimore Alumnus Chapter, the National Engineering Honor Society. He also serves in a leadership capacity on several National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Committees. He is married to Dr. Martha Gagnon, who received her Ph.D. in Education from the University of Maryland in 1990.
