Scholarship History

The Dr. Harry B. Green Endowed Scholarship was establsihed in 2008 by Dr. Harry B. Green and his former advisees, students, professional colleagues, family and friends. Spendable Income from the Dr. Harry B. Green Endowed Scholarship provides an annual spring semester scholarship to assist in the graduate school internship/apprenticeship tuition credit expenses for a graduate student enrolled in College of Education Master's Certification Program in elementary or secondary education (MCERT).

Donor Statement

Dr. Harry Bruce Green, Jr. was born in Washington, D.C. on January 29, 1937. He attended public schools in the commonwealth of Virginia in Arlington, Shenandoah and Henrico counties and graduated from Hermitage High School in Henrico County in Richmond, VA in 1955. He received the Miller Scholarship in Biology and received a Bachelors of Arts degree with Distinction in 1959 from the University of Virginia. While there, he was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1958.

The recipient of both the Woodrow Wilson and the Danforth Fellowship for Graduate Study, Dr. Green received his M.Ed. in 1963 and his Ph.D. in 1965 from the University of Virginia with a concentration in Counseling Psychology, Guidance and Psychological Testing, and began a career as a Counseling Psychologist at the University of California, Berkeley from 1965-67. He then went on to become a tenured assistant professor in the Department of Human Development, Institute for Child Study at the University of Maryland College of Education. His concentrations were in the areas of teaching and service. He directed 37 research dissertations and served on more than 200 dissertation committees. After 31 years of service to the College of Education, Dr. Green retired in 1998. He received a Citation from the Governor of Maryland for his commitment to students and his service to higher education.

In 2006 former advisees and graduate students of Dr. Green established an endowed fund to support graduate students in the College of Education at the University of Maryland, College Park.
