The Youth Leadership Foundation established the Johnny Holliday Scholarship in July 2007 to support graduates of the Youth Leadership Foundation with demonstrated financial need. This fund honors Johnny Holliday's many years of outstanding service to the University of Maryland and their organization.
A native of Miami, Florida, Johnny Holliday began his broadcasting career in Perry, Georgia, and has worked in some of the nation's premier markets - Cleveland, New York, San Francisco and Washington. In 2003 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He has anchored the ABC radio coverage of every summer and winter Olympics since 1984 as well as several other notable athletic events. In addition to his radio career he has had leading roles as an actor in summer stock and dinner theatre musicals.
In 1978 he became the "Voice of the Terrapins" at the University of Maryland. In addition to calling the action for Maryland basketball and football games he also hosts the Gary Williams and Ralph Friedgen television shows and serves as Director of Broadcasting for the Terps. His dedication to the University community is legendary and is surpassed only by his dedication to the Washington, D.C. community. He has helped raise more than $1.5 million for various charities and was once named an annual Washingtonian of the Year by Washingtonian Magazine.
Johnny Holliday remains committed to providing educational opportunities for college students and believes that all students should have access to a college education, regardless of their financial background. For many years he has been actively involved with the Youth Leadership Foundation, which provides challenging academic and character building programs for under served students in the Washington, D.C. region and affords those students the best opportunity to achieve their dreams of graduating from high school and enrolling in the college of their choice.
In order to honor Johnny Holliday's many years of outstanding service to both the University of Maryland and their organization, the Youth Leadership Foundation established an endowed fund to support scholarships at the University.
