Dr. John Chi-Lin Wang Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship History

The parents and siblings of John Chi-Lin Wang '80 '83 established the Dr. John Chi-Lin Wang Memorial Scholarship in April 2001 to support a graduate student studying astronomy. Dr. John Chi-Lin Wang was an assistant professor of astronomy at the University before he tragically passed away while hiking in 1998.

Donor Statement

A native of Taipei, Taiwan, John Chi-Lin Wang spent some of his formative years in Athens, Greece, and Portland, Oregon. He received his B.S. magna cum laude with high honors in physics and membership in Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Maryland in 1980, and his M.S. (1983) and Ph.D. (1988) in physics from Cornell University.

In 1994, he joined the faculty of his alma mater as an assistant professor of astronomy. During the four years he taught at the University of Maryland, John Wang took a special interest in undergraduate education and played an important role in the development of the undergraduate astronomy curriculum.

Tragically, John Chi-Lin Wang died at the age of 38 on August 8, 1998, while hiking on La Plata Peak in Colorado. His parents and siblings established, through the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, Inc., an endowed fund to honor his memory and support students in the Department of Astronomy at the University of Maryland, College Park.
