Established in September 1998 to honor the memory of Dr. Julian L. Simon, professor of business administration in the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University from 1983 to 1998, by his wife, Dr. Rita Simon, and his colleague Dr. Lee Preston. The income shall be used to provide at least one annual award for the best senior honors thesis in each graduating class (December and May) in the Robert H. Smith School of Business.
Professor Julian Simon was known for his inquisitive mind and optimistic spirit, traits that confounded the environmental doomsayers he challenged but that inspired colleagues and students alike in the Smith School of Business. He was a professor of business administration in the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University from 1983 to 1998. Simon died on February 8, 1998. Dr. Rita Simon, his wife, and colleague Dr. Lee Preston established an endowment fund to create an award in Simon's Memory, The Julian L. Simon Honors Thesis Award. The award will be given annually for the best senior honors thesis in the December and May graduating classes. Dr. Simon taught in the honors program and, with this award in his memory, will continue to encourage the quest for knowledge.
