James R. Beers Endowed Scholarship

Scholarship History

James R. Beers established the James R. Beers Scholarship Fund in June 2006 to support undergraduate students in the Robert H. Smith School of Business. Co-Founder of Beers & Cutler, now known as Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, Beers is considered one of the elder statesmen and insiders of Washington’s real estate development community.

Donor Statement

An active supporter of the educational development of aspiring business and accounting professionals, James R. Beers has served as an adjunct and visiting professor teaching courses in accounting, entrepreneurship and finance at leading universities in the United States, United Kingdom, France and China. His career has included numerous leadership positions including managing partner of Beers & Cutler until 2000 and board of director appointments with the Federal City Council, DC National Bank, McArthur Glen Realty and Transcom Worldwide S.A.

Jim has also served the community and profession as a faculty member of the American Law Institute-American Bar Association, a member of the board of directors of the Washington Scholarship Fund, the Greater Washington Society of CPAs, and the AICPA Management of an Accounting Practice and Strategic Planning Committees. Jim continues working with long time clients and remains involved in the professional development of Beers & Cutler's employees. He is also active in professional and civic activities in the Metropolitan Washington community.

Recognizing that the Robert H. Smith School of Business is committed to seeking students who excel in academic performance and who demonstrate the potential for exemplary contribution to the accounting profession, Beers & Cutler PLLC and James R. Beers established the James R. Beers Scholarship to support scholarships for accounting students at the University of Maryland and to recognize outstanding academic performance in the undergraduate accounting program in the Smith School.
