Dr. Mark Sobel '82 and Mary Sobel established the Mark Sobel Jr. Endowed Scholarship for Undergraduate Students of the Sciences in May 2016 to provide need- and merit-based scholarships for undergraduate students in the College of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences.
Dr. and Mrs. Sobel created this fund in memory of their late son, Mark Jr., who suddenly passed away in 2011 from acute myocarditis at the age of 17. Mark Jr.'s kidney was also donated to a dear friend, Maryland alumnus and former Maryland football player, Frank Romano.
Mark Jr. dreamed of becoming a doctor. It is the Sobel family's wish that through this scholarship, others aspiring to the medical profession may come to realize their dream.
Mark '82 and Mary Grace Sobel created this scholarship to memorialize their late son, Mark Jr., who passed away suddenly from acute myocarditis in 2011 at the age of 17. They donated a gift of life, Mark's kidney, to a dear friend, Maryland alumnus and former Maryland football player, Frank Romano. Mark Jr. loved the University of Maryland, as does Mark Sr. The Sobel Family has precious memories of Mark Jr. tailgating with his family on Saturday afternoons. Mark Jr. would love to explore the campus and would have likely attended the University as an undergraduate student. Mark Jr.'s dream was to one day become a doctor. It is the Sobel Family's wish that through this scholarship, others aspiring to the medical profession may come to realize their dream.
