In honor of his retirement, friends and colleagues of William Bechhoefer established the William and Sondra Bechhoefer Travel Scholarship in 2002 to provide awards for travel and study abroad for architecture students traveling to countries outside of Western Europe. Bechhoefer is known for his focus on regionalism and multiculturalism related to design practice. He was designated a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher by the University of Maryland, and in 1996 he was elected to Fellowship in the American Institute of Architects.
William Bechhoefer joined the faculty of the School of Architecture at the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1970 to teach design studio and theory courses. Professor Bechhoefer's particular interest in the architecture and urbanism of the Islamic world has prompted him and his wife, Sondra, to lead travel/study programs in Afghanistan, Turkey, Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt. He has directed a graduate degree concentration in Regional and International Studies in Architecture, and he also has coordinated the study abroad programs offered by the Architecture Program.
