Frank B. McDonald was unselfishly dedicated to promoting space science. He was not only a pioneer of the exploration of space, not only a most effective administrator, not only a mentor to young students and other scientists, but he was all of that and more. He strongly believed that universities make a vital contribution to science and was, among other things, instrumental in creating the University of Maryland Space Physics Group of the Department of Physics. He was more interested in advancing science than in winning awards or achieving high positions. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word, with high ideals and scientific honesty that he pursued with the utmost consideration of others. It was the good fortune and privilege of numerous graduate students and scientists in the Physics and Astronomy Departments and the Institute for Physical Science and Technology, where Frank McDonald maintained an active research program for the last 22 years of his life, to have known and worked with him.

In memory of Frank McDonald, Dr. and Mrs. George Gloeckler established an endowed fund to support scholarships for graduate students in the Department of Physics in the College of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences.
