Joseph R. Castiglione '79 and Kristen Castiglione established the Joseph R. Castiglione & Family Undergraduate Studies Scholarship in October 2011 to support students in the individual studies program in the Office of Undergraduate Studies.
While growing up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and then attending college at the University of Maryland, Joseph R. Castiglione ’79 set a career goal for himself of becoming a college athletics director. Since he was enrolled in the University’s Undergraduate Studies program, Joe was able to create his own individual studies major (IVSP) of sports management to support his professional ambitions. At the age of 35, Joe accomplished his goal when he was named the Athletic Director at the University of Missouri. While at Missouri, Joe also met and married his wife, Kristen. The Castigliones have since built a loving family and Joe has emerged as one of the most awarded and respected college athletics directors in the country. Since 1998, Joe has been directing the athletics program at the University of Oklahoma. In 2009, Joe was named National Athletic Director of the Year by the Sports Business Journal. In 2007, he was named the Undergraduate Studies and University of Maryland Distinguished Alumnus.
Joe believes that the flexibility and support of Maryland’s Undergraduate Studies program was instrumental in preparing him for career success. In recognition of this fact, Joseph R. ’79 and Kristen Castiglione established, an endowed fund to support students enrolled in the individual studies program (IVSP) in the Office of Undergraduate Studies.
