Family, friends and colleagues of Dr. Jerry V. DeBarthe, led by his wife, Martha S. Debarthe, established the Dr. Jerry V. DeBarthe Memorial Scholarship in September 2000 to support animal sciences students. Dr. DeBarthe joined the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences in 1969 and focused his attention on meeting and addressing student needs before he passed away in 1997 during a conference.
Dr. Jerry V. DeBarthe joined the faculty of the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park in 1969. He spent most of his University of Maryland career as an animal sciences teacher, advisor, mentor and researcher. Dr. DeBarthe served as Undergraduate Coordinator for animal sciences until July of 1996 when he was appointed Assistant Dean for Academic Programs in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Throughout his tenure at the university, Dr. DeBarthe focused his attention on meeting and addressing student needs. He served as a faculty advisor to the AGNR Student Council for more than twelve years and was a guiding influence behind the annual Student Ag Day Event.
Dr. DeBarthe died on April 24, 1997 while attending a work conference in Calvert County, Maryland. To honor his memory, his family, friends and colleagues have established an endowed scholarship fund.
