In honor of his retirement, colleagues, friends and former students of Dr. Noel Myricks established the Noel Myricks Scholarship Endowment in November 2004 to support first-generation college students in the Department of Family Studies, now the Department of Family Science.
Dr. Noel Myricks, Associate Professor Emeritus in Family Studies, taught, mentored and inspired a generation of college students. During his tenure at the University, he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in family law, children and the law, family mediation, and family crisis intervention, providing students with invaluable legal expertise for future professional positions and graduate study. A nationally recognized family scholar specializing on the intersection of families and the law, his research targeted important issues affecting child and family well-being, including child support, divorce and custody issues, paternity testing, adoption, and children's rights to medical treatment. Dr. Myricks is best known on campus for developing, directing, and coaching the University of Maryland Mock Trial Team, which won five national mock trial championships in the last decade. The recipient of countless teaching honors, Dr. Myricks was awarded the Kirwan Undergraduate Education Award and the University System of Maryland Regents Award for Mentorship in 2003.
In order to honor Dr. Myricks' retirement, his colleagues, friends and former students established, through the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, Inc., an endowed fund to support student scholarships in the Department of Family Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park.
