Nina Rodale Houghton established the Harry R. Hughes Endowed Fellowship in January 2007 to support an exceptional undergraduate or graduate student through the Maryland Center for Agro-Ecology, now known as the Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology, Inc., in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. This fund was established in honor of Governor Hughes' service to the citizens and resources of the state of Maryland.
For more than fifty years, Harry Hughes dedicated himself to improving the overall quality of life for citizens in the State of Maryland and has been a leader in the efforts to restore our greatest natural resource, the Chesapeake Bay. As Governor, he signed the first Chesapeake Bay Agreement-quite literally a watershed moment. As a private citizen, he continues to demonstrate his strong commitment to the Bay through his service on numerous boards and commissions. Harry Hughes' work as Governor and subsequently as a member of the Chesapeake Bay Trust, Chair of the Blue Ribbon Citizens Pfiesteria Commission, President of the Maryland Center for Agro-Ecology and Chairman of the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy distinguish him as one of the greatest leaders in the effort to "Save the Bay" and the working lands of Maryland.
