Mary Ann Gardner established the Bruce L. Gardner Memorial Scholarship in October 2008 to support graduate students in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics.
In 1981, Dr. Bruce L. Gardner joined the faculty of the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics. Throughout his tenure at the University, he served in a variety of capacities with only one break in service to take a leave of absence from September 1989 to January 1992 to serve as Assistant Secretary for Economics in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. From 2000 to 2003 he served as chair of the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics and from 2003 to 2005 he served as interim dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. His service to the University was recognized with the designation of Distinguished University Professor.
In addition to his academic service to the campus and the college, Bruce worked with the World Bank and other international organizations on agricultural policies and reform in many developing countries around the world. Dr. Gardner passed away on March 13, 2008. He was a wonderful teacher, colleague and friend and is survived by his wife, two children and three grandchildren.
In order to provide a permanent and lasting legacy in Dr. Gardnerís memory, Mary Ann Gardner established, through the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, Inc., an endowed fund to support graduate students at the University of Maryland, College Park.
