Scholarship History

Established in February 1990 by Walter T. Shirley, Jr., and amended in March 1992, and August 1994. At the request of the trustee of the donor's estate, due to changed conditions, the fund was amended again in March 2003 through a Resolution approved by the University System of Maryland Foundation, Inc. Board. The income from this quasi-endowment shall be used to (1) provide a minimum of 9 annual scholarship awards in the amount of $2,500 each to full-time undergraduate students of the College of Arts and Humanities; (2) an amount equal to not more than 10%of the income shall be available annually to support guest lectureships; (3) one scholarship in the amount of $2,500 shall be awarded every other year, beginning with the 2004-2005 academic year, to a full-time graduate student in the College of Information Studies; (4) an amount equivalent to one half of one scholarship award ($1,250) shall be given annually to the English Department at the College of William and Mary in Virginia, to be used is such manner as it may deem appropriate and consistent with the intent of the donor.
