George R. Irwin Centennial Research Award

Scholarship History

William L. Fourney established the George Irwin Centennial Research Award in December 1992 to provide travel support for graduate students specializing in experimental mechanics or fracture mechanics in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Recipients will also receive a copy of “Fracture Research in Retrospect: An Anniversary Volume in Honor of G. R. Irwin's 90th Birthday.” This fund was established in honor of Professor George R. Irwin, a pioneer in creating fracture mechanics. George Irwin began teaching in 1975. He was a graduate adviser and researcher in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and his research in fracture mechanics has been used worldwide for fracture control in aircraft, nuclear reactor vessels and other fracture-critical applications.
